Project Charter – Advanced Analytics

When to Write a Charter

  • Create the charter after a successful proof of concept (POC).
  • The charter is the first step toward building a production solution.

Charter Template

  • Use the official template: Project Charter Template
  • Build the charter with input from developers, analysts, and stakeholders.
  • Use working sessions to clarify goals, scope, risks, and success criteria.
  • Update the charter as new information emerges.
  • Present the charter to stakeholders and approvers as a presentation that can easily be digested to expedite approval process

Using AI Tools

  • Use AI (Copilot) to:
    • Draft sections and generate ideas.
    • Identify risks, constraints, and opportunities.
    • Make objectives and outcomes specific and measurable.

Referencing the Charter

  • Use the charter to guide:
    • Backlog creation—ensure tasks align with goals and scope.
    • Milestone reviews—confirm deliverables meet objectives.
    • Pre-deployment checks—validate solution matches requirements.
    • Change requests—update the charter when scope or requirements shift.
    • Retrospectives—review if the team stayed on target.
    • Stakeholder reviews and risk assessments.

Best Practices

  • Be specific—define goals, objectives, and measurement criteria clearly.
  • Document assumptions and dependencies.
  • Keep stakeholders informed and involved.
  • Track revisions with document management tools.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the charter alone, without team input.
  • Not referencing the charter during development.
  • Vague objectives or outcomes.
  • Not using available tools (including AI) to improve the charter.
