Real-Time Drilling

General Information

Real-time drilling refers to the use of advanced technology and data analytics to monitor and control drilling operations in real-time, allowing for adjustments to be made on the fly to optimize performance and avoid costly mistakes. This can include the use of sensors and telemetry to gather data on drilling parameters such as rate of penetration, weight on bit, and torque, as well as the use of software and algorithms to analyze this data and make adjustments to the drilling process as needed. The goal of real-time drilling is to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase safety by allowing operators to quickly respond to changes in drilling conditions.

Project Description

There are two objectives of the project:

  1. Create a pipeline to receive and process drilling data in semi-real time from EDR providers into the existing drilling database. The two primary EDR providers in Canada are MD Totco (NOV) and Pason.
  2. A backfilling mechanism to load historical wells into the database from .csv or .txt file, downloaded from the provider’s data hub.

Overview on Electronic Drilling Recorder (EDR)

An electronic drilling recorder (EDR) is a device that is used to continuously record drilling data during drilling operations. It captures various drilling parameters such as weight on bit, torque, rotary speed, and drilling depth, among others via sets of sensors placed at major equipment of a drilling rig such as top drive, mud pump, drawworks, generators, etc. The EDR records the data in real-time and stores it in an electronic format, typically on a hard drive or other non-volatile memory. This allows the data to be easily retrieved and analyzed later on.

Some EDRs also include built-in displays to show the current drilling parameters in real-time. EDRs are often used in conjunction with other drilling automation and data management systems, such as Pason’s DDES and MD Totco’s RigSense, to provide a comprehensive view of drilling operations and help optimize performance, improve safety, and reduce costs.

MD Totco’s EDR (RigSense)

MD Totco is a division of Measurement Drilling Systems, a subsidiary of National Oilwell Varco (NOV). MD Totco provides drilling instrumentation and controls for the oil and gas industry, including drilling instrumentation, automated drilling systems, and drilling control systems. These products provide real-time data and control to optimize drilling performance, improve safety, and reduce costs. MD Totco’s products are used on land-based and offshore drilling rigs, and are designed to work in a variety of drilling environments, including harsh conditions.

MD Totco’s RigSense includes:

  • Drilling instrumentation and control systems
  • Data acquisition and analysis software
  • Remote monitoring and control capabilities
  • Advanced visualization and analytics software

Pason System

Pason Systems is a Canadian company specializing in data management and automation solutions for the oil and gas industry. Their products include drilling data management systems, wellsite automation systems, and data analytics software. Pason’s products help improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support better decisions. Founded in 1984, Pason is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.

Pason’s real-time drilling systems include:

  • Data acquisition units (DAUs)
  • Drilling data management systems (DDMS)
  • Advanced visualization and analytics software
  • Remote monitoring and control capabilities

Pason’s platform “Pason Active Rig Intelligence” (PARI) is a popular real-time drilling platform, providing advanced analytics, real-time drilling data, and data visualization.
